So often I get asked on the phone, where do I get a piece of carpet for a repair? Usually this is from a tenant moving out of a rental suite and doing the right thing, repairing some small damage in the carpet. Most homeowners have spare carpet from when the carpet was installed, most rental suites do not have that advantage. Or if there is a spare piece of carpet in a suite it is used as a door mat and in such bad condition it cannot be used for a repair piece.
The closet is a great source of carpet for a repair! I can remove a piece of exactly the same dye lot of carpet, yes it has never been walked on and has no sun fade. But it is the closest match you will ever find, and if you get a piece of carpet that is close in appearance that can go in the closet. And you would be amazed to find that the difference just blends in the smaller the repair is.
In the picture to the right I cut carpet for a repair from the very back and the left side, can you see it? The piece the homeowner supplied didn’t match well for height or colour however the repair just disappears in the shaded hidden recesses of the back of the closet.
Some rooms of carpet don’t have closets, now what? Sometimes we can take a small piece of carpet from under a baseboard heater. Recently we did a repair in a home that had been a movie set where the carpet in the room was stretched to find a piece of carpet that could be used as a repair piece.
